Free mobile apps ‘drain battery faster’

Angry_BirdsFree mobile apps which use third-party services to display advertising consume considerably more battery life, a new study suggests.

Researchers used a special tool to monitor energy use by several apps on Android and Windows Phone handsets. Findings suggested that in one case 75% of an app’s energy consumption was spent on powering advertisements.

Sony unveils ‘floating interface’ touchless display

The firm describes the technology as a “floating touch” user-interface.  The Xperia Sola handset is due to go on sale in the second half of 2012.

New iPad sold by Tesco for £50 ‘won’t be honoured’

ipad_tescoTesco has told thousands of disappointed shoppers they will not get their hands on a cut-price new iPad after it was listed at £49.99 on its website due to a pricing glitch, as queues have already started to form at Apple stores.

Levels of excitement over the new tablet are set to hit fever pitch over the coming days, which seemed to lead to at least one slip on Tesco’s online premises.

Apple unveils new iPad with high-definition screen

tim-cook-new-ipad-introApple has unveiled a new iPad with a high-definition screen.  It said the resolution of the display was 2,048 by 1,536 pixels. The tablet is also powered by a new A5X chip with improved graphics performance.

Apple dominates the market but should face a fresh challenge later this year when tablets running the full Windows 8 system are expected to go on sale.

The Greatest Apple App Store Hits of All Time

apple-thanksTo celebrate its 25 billion App Store downloads milestone, Apple has released a list of the most popular iPhone and iPad apps of all time.

Topping the list of free all-time favorites for the iPhone is Facebook, followed by Pandora Radio, Words With Friends Free, Skype and the Weather Channel.  On the paid iPhone app front, Angry Birds is leading the pack, followed by more of games: Fruit Ninja, Doodle Jump, Cut the Rope and Angry Birds Seasons.

Ofcom wants mobile phone bills to contain fewer surprises

smartphoneMobile phone customers will be allowed to set their own limits on how much they spend, under measures set out by Ofcom.

In a review of surprisingly high bills, the telecommunications regulator found that mobile customers were most likely to be affected: as many as 1.4m mobile phone contract customers may have suffered unexpectedly high bills in the past six months.

Nokia reveals 41MP cameraphone

Nokia-808A 41-megapixel Nokia smartphone was among the new technology on show during the opening day of Mobile World Congress in Barcelona.

The 808 Pureview offers enhanced low-light performance as well as sophisticated image compression designed to help users share pictures. Nokia hopes to regain ground lost to Google and Apple in the mobile market.

Mobile roaming charges likely to fall after EU vote

mobile-roamingIt could soon cost less to use mobile phones when travelling abroad in the European Union.

MEPs have voted today for a significant cut in the price companies can charge for calls and texts and – for the first time ever – to introduce a maximum fee for data usage.  It’s the latest in a long running effort by EU officials to increase competition in the single market when it comes to mobile roaming.
